1. To provide a record of what is available in the collection
2. To provide access to the information in the collection.
Characteristics of an Effective Catalogue
1. Flexibility (doesn’t limit searching methods, and broad use more that a single user)
2. Ease of use
3. Ease and const (effectiveness of production and maintenance)
4. Compactness and portability
Functions of Catalogue
Identifying: each item in describe in sufficient detail to distinguish it form all others I the collection.
Location: records identify and describe and provide guide where to locate items. Clearly indicate
Collocating: group together records representing materials written by same author, or same subject, etc.
